Atlanta is the capital of the 21st state of America, Georgia. The
city of Atlanta is the undisputed capital city of the Southeast
as leads the way in terms of job creation and business opportunities.
The city has a young feel to it. It is prosperous, its· people
upbeat and positive. In terms of age Atlanta is a very young city
and was only incorporated in 1847. During this time it was nothing
more than an insignificant center of transportation. This was the
case until the Civil War when its geographic location made it an
ideal site for a massive Confederacy munitions industry. Its importance
to the Confederacy made it an ideal target for the Union army.
At a first glance Atlanta is a typical large North American city
with all the trappings that this includes such as sprawling suburbs.
Its population has reached 3.5 million with the city divided by
freeways. In general the separate neighborhoods have also got a
separate racial identity. While it is easy to divide Atlanta by
racial demographics it must be said that Atlanta is a very progressive
city and doesn't dwell on a difficult history.
Not many of the building in Atlanta predate 1915 and nothing predates
1868. While not much in terms of bricks and mortar survives 1868
many of the societal institutions have changed little. In terms
of Atlanta's tradition the peak must be the 1996 Olympics. The attempted
bid for the Olympics was headed by mayor Andrew Young who coincidently
was the first Southern Black Congressman since Reconstruction who
later went on to become President Carter's ambassador to the United
Nations. Among the massive internationally known corporations who
are based in Atlanta is Coca-Cola.
